13-Year-Old Girl Duped into Stealing HK$300,000 Worth of Family Jewelry in Online Scam

A 13-year-old girl from Hong Kong has fallen victim to an online scam, leading her to steal HK$300,000 in gold jewelry and diamonds from her family. The scammer misled her into believing that she could easily duplicate gold items for profit.

The girl was enticed by a misleading advertisement on a shopping platform, which promised quick financial gains without any legal risks. Under this false pretense, she accessed her family’s safe and handed over the valuables to someone she thought was a collector. Over a week, the scammer collected items from her on four separate occasions, failing to deliver on any promises of payment.

The theft was discovered when the girl’s mother noticed the missing jewelry and reported it to the police. Authorities acted quickly, conducting a sting operation on September 11, resulting in the arrest of an 18-year-old woman believed to be involved in the scam. Investigations revealed that this young woman was also a victim, having been lured into the scheme with promises of easy money.

Police have emphasized the manipulative tactics used by fraudsters to exploit the vulnerability of minors and others in financial distress. They warned that while such scams may seem appealing, they are often elaborate schemes aimed at defrauding individuals.

Authorities are urging young people to be cautious of offers that appear too good to be true and recommend that older adults verify any suspicious communications with family members. Reporting any suspicious activities to the police or contacting anti-fraud hotlines is also advised to prevent further incidents.
